The rare and threatened \ud835\ude47\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude62 \ud835\ude62\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5e grows only in a small area of \u200b\u200bsouth-western Sardinia, and the Biodiversity Conservation Centre – Germoplasma Bank of Sardinia has analysed 7,000 seeds to better understand the germination strategies of this endemic species protected by the Habitats Directive 92\/43\/EEC.<\/p>\n\n
Studies have revealed that \ud835\ude47\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude62 \ud835\ude62\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5e seeds are able to germinate in moderate temperature conditions (15-20 \u00b0C) and that specific treatments can help them overcome dormancy, thus widening the thermal range favorable to their germination.<\/p>\n\n
Understanding germination biology is essential to protect biodiversity. The results obtained support both \ud835\ude26\ud835\ude39 \ud835\ude34\ud835\ude2a\ud835\ude35\ud835\ude36 conservation, through germplasm banks, and \ud835\ude2a\ud835\ude2f \ud835\ude34\ud835\ude2a\ud835\ude35\ud835\ude36 conservation, thanks to targeted interventions such as the strengthening of existing populations and the reintroduction of the species into its natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n
