Monitoring in Sardinia

In recent days, the Biodiversity Conservation Center (CCB) and the Sardinian Germplasm Bank (BG-SAR), in collaboration with the staff of the Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park, have carried out an important monitoring activity in the dune system on the edge of the Quartu Sant’Elena salt pans.

In the affected area, already equipped with biodegradable bionets to combat erosion, we intervened with the eradication of the Hottentot fig (𝘊𝘒𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘡𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘱.), an invasive alien species that was compromising the same habitat as π™‡π™žπ™£π™–π™§π™žπ™– 𝙛𝙑𝙖𝙫𝙖 𝙨π™ͺ𝙗𝙨π™₯. 𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙀𝙖, an endemic Sardinian-Corsican plant, internationally threatened and protected by the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.

The activities carried out as part of our project are aimed at promoting the natural recolonization of native vegetation and supporting the conservation of π™‡π™žπ™£π™–π™§π™žπ™– 𝙛𝙑𝙖𝙫𝙖 𝙨π™ͺ𝙗𝙨π™₯. 𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙀𝙖, contributing to the protection of a dune ecosystem of high naturalistic value.
